The Center for Family Representation, which represents parents in child welfare proceedings, hosted a Rise writing workshop for young parents who themselves grew up in foster care. Completed by four young parents, the workshop met weekly for 16 weeks, culminating in a presentation of their stories by two participants. This workshop was supported by the Pinkerton Foundation. Stories from this workshop include:
Family After Foster Care: I want my daughter to have the love and security I finally found
‘I Needed Help That My Family Couldn’t Give Me’
Since 2012, Rise’s ‘My Story, My Life’ writing workshops have given voice to the unique experiences of young parents who have faced foster care both as children and adults. Our three issues arising from these writing groups–Generations in Care, What It Takes and Someone to Turn To–emphasize what has helped these parents overcome challenges.
